Do we really know Alastor Moody? |

This is a question that has bugged me every time I read GoF. We find out at the end that the professor we thought was Alastor Moody is really Barty Crouch, Jr. The fake Moody is a decent person for most of the books, really teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, including how to resist the Cruciatus (sp?) Curse, etc. If Crouch hated HP as much as a devoted followed of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would be expected to, shouldn't we have seen a little foreshadowing? The revelation that Moody is not Moody at all just seems awfully sudden to me. And finally, will the Moody that we will (presumably) meet in OotP be anything like the Moody-really-Crouch in GoF? Any thoughts?

Yeah, the thought had occured to me aswell. In my opinion he is exactly like the real Moody. Why? Because Dumbledore would of noticed sooner if he was not as he seemed. Remember Dumbledore said at the end "I knew the real Alastor Moody would not have taken you out of my sight." That seems to suggest if Moody had acted in any way unlike the real Moody then Dumbledore would of noticed.
P.S. It was the Imperius Curse he taught then to resist not the Cruciatus wasn't it?

Agreed, but I still think it was too sudden. It would have been better if there were a few hints earlier in the book, which we could notice after reading it, and think, "oh, now I get it!" Crouch Jr. is extremely dangerous, given his ability to pull off such a huge fraud on none other than Albus Dumbledore, who is renowned for his keen powers of observation. I would expect that we would hear lots more from him...that is, if he still had his soul.
And yeah, you're right about the Imperious Curse. My bad.

that's the part that I liked though, it caught me off guard and made me go "d'oh!" The surprises from HP are what makes the series good. If there was foreshadowing then I'd be able to guess the ending and ruin it.
but that's just my opinion. I like surprises.

JK Rowling has said that the real Moody is even cooler! Can you imagine? It does seem as though the fake Moody had an unnecessarily complicated way of getting Harry sometimes, but then again it's hard to say given that the series is incomplete and we don't know everything there is to know about Hogwarts. Good question.

QUOTE given his ability to pull off such a huge fraud on none other than Albus Dumbledore, who is renowned for his keen powers of observation. Well, Dumbledore wasn't exactly wallowing in free time during this book, so he wouldn't have noticed things he normally would have, right? Dumbledore had the tournament, rumors on Voldemort, Harry Potter, the foreign guests, and a few other things buggering him. I would have found it hard to notice my friend acting slightly odd. Well, I take that back, my friends are always doing crazy things that make me wonder if they are the same person. *laughs* QUOTE It does seem as though the fake Moody had an unnecessarily complicated way of getting Harry sometimes Yeah, wouldn't have just been really easy to have given Harry a portkey while Harry was following him after the incident with the golden egg and the stairs? *beats forehead* Sometimes evil people can be immensely stupid!

This is from a list of 101 things I would do as an evil overlord.
The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of Eternity. It will be in my safe-deposit box. The same applies to the object which is my one weakness.
Evil people have a way of complicating things.

Crouch did an incredibly good job of pretending to be Moody, to the point that it's kind of unbelievable. Are there any parts where Crouch slips and says or does something which wouldn't fit with Moody's character? (From what we know of him)

well there was this part that he was being REALLY nice to Harry,Ron,and Hermione. But that might just ALSO be Moody's real personality.

Yes, Moody seems like a nice guy from what we know so far. Just the fact that Dumbledore trusts him/is possibly friends with him means that he can't be too bad.
