Wouldn't you think that your wand would be destroyed by the Ministry if you were sentenced to Azkaban? I mean, if you were a highly dangerous criminal, wouldn't your wand HAVE to be taken away? It's weird because how did Sirius (tear!) and the other escapees get a wands, if they in fact were removed?

I imagine they could get hold of one. Either steal it or get someone else to buy one off someone. Theres probably loads of second hand wands around.

I think they would destroy it but it would be easy for them to get another one

I'm sure the wands are destroyed. If they snap a student's wand in half after getting expelled, they have to do the same with convicted criminals. People can always get new wands though.

Well you think they wouldnt, because of the fact that people can be proven innocent later after going to azkaban. Plus Hagrid was sent to Azkaban and then released...so obviously not every1 has life sentances so they probly keep it somewhere, like in a personal belongings box or something.

well first of all lets be resonable
if ur in azkaban of course they destroy ur wand im pretty sure it says that n 1 of the books bu ti dont remember.
second of all u can buy a new 1
either u can pay sum1 to go buy u 1 cus u proly cant get into diagon alley or im sure there is some undergroudn wand sellers just like drug dealers and what not
so its actually quite easy.

What KB said... since they always destory their wands when they're just expelled, they're bound to do the same or more for the more dangerous criminals.

But if that's the case, the question is, how did Sirius escape? I mean, to transform as an animagi, you need a wand, don't you?

Wow, a post I did back in june....... laugh.gif

Anyway, I always assumed you didn't need a wand to transform. The reason being, if you needed one, how could you change back? I suppose you would need hands to hold the wand, which is a bit of a problem if you are a dog or a rat....... smile.gif

Well...if u were in Azkaban with all the dementors it would be hard to cast any spell anyways, wouldn't it? Because you go all crazy and it makes it difficult. Ok maybe im wrong but im sure im right or close dry.gif ...or maybe they do take it just in case.
Either way...

I don't think it would be that easy--if they stole one, it would risk getting caught again and being put back in azkaban, possibly...and they wouldn't be able to just trot on into a wand shop and buy a new one

But the wand chooses the wizard. I always got the impression that there was only one wand that would work for the best for a wizard and the no other wand would work as well. Thats why wands are so important and why hagrid cant just go out and by a new one.
